But YOU, who do YOU say I am?

“Who do you say I am?” … It’s one of the most searching questions Jesus puts to his disciples – and to us. Peter answers: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus then entrusts him with a mission: “You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church.”

The first reading gives us a striking image of what that responsibility means. Eliakim is given “the key of the House of David”. A key is not simply something to

possess; it’s something that opens. It gives access. It enables people to enter.

Perhaps that’s a helpful image for the Church today. We are called to be people who open doors – not only the doors of our Church building, but the doors of belonging, friendship and faith. There are many people around us who are searching: for meaning, for community, for somewhere they can ask questions, or simply for a place where they feel welcomed and known. How good are we at helping them find the door?

As a parish, St Ignatius is blessed with extraordinary diversity. Week by week, people from many cultures and backgrounds gather here. But there are others who may be standing at the edges, wondering whether there’s a place for them. The question for us is not simply whether our doors are physically open, but whether our community is genuinely inviting. A warm welcome, a conversation after Mass, an invitation to join a group, or simply noticing someone who’s new can sometimes be the small key that helps another person take a step towards belonging.

The Gospel reminds us that this mission begins with Christ. We don’t open the doors merely to make the parish larger; we open them so that people might encounter Jesus, the “Son of the living God”.

So perhaps this Sunday we might ask ourselves: Who are the people around us who are searching? And what might we do to help them find the door? Christ has entrusted us with the keys. Let’s use them generously.

The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which seeks to legalise assisted suicide, has returned to the House of Commons.
